I established In Writing in 1995, turning a talent and passion for clear communications into a small, friendly and flexible business.

Since then I have built a solid and diverse client base across public and private sectors in industries including health and community services, infrastructure development and construction, automotive, tourism, finance, state and local government.

I specialise in editing and writing and apply my many years of experience to communications of all kinds – from websites, newsletters, project profiles and articles through to reports, books, podcasts, training and user guides.

I have a Bachelor of Commerce (The University of Melbourne) and a Graduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing (RMIT).

MY APPROACH

I believe in making the writing and editing process as simple as possible. 

I ask questions

To understand your communications aims, your business and your audience.

I’ll ask stupid questions if that means I get a true understanding of your message and can help you communicate effectively. 

Being a freelancer means I can also question approaches – all with the aim of making sure you produce the right words for the right audience in the right format. 

But I’m always tactful and I am gentle with authors and contributors.

I understand the job

Before putting fingers to keyboards, I make sure that you and I are both clear about what is required – and what we expect from each other. I prepare job briefs and can provide quotes.

I am also happy to produce copy style samples that we can agree on before extensive writing begins. This ensures that you are happy with the writing style and content and I know which path to follow. 

I can prepare comprehensive briefs for all aspects of the production process, such as design, photography, print or production, and have experience working with a range of contractors.

I meet deadlines and budget

Every time. I am proud of my record of delivering what the client wants in the agreed time and within the agreed budget. Working for more than 20 years in this profession has made me very efficient, reliable and flexible.

I love plain English

I believe that clarity is the most important asset of any communication. I am regularly engaged to turn specialist information into plain English. I work with subject matter experts to ensure that information is accessible in style, voice, content and format to the intended audience. 

I know the rules

I am particularly experienced in working within writing and branding guidelines and meeting publication conventions. I can apply your established style or create a new style and voice (and develop your very own style/branding guide required). I am very familiar with common writing and publication standards, such as Australian Government Publishing Service (AGPS) and American Psychological Association (APA) styles.
